Why buying a utility trailer if we can build it by ourselves? Are you always looking for a good project? You need to consider creating a nice trailer instead of buying it. My objective here is to be able to build a trailer with the same cost I’d afford from buying one from the market. I also wanted to learn how to build in a tilting feature to make loading an easier process.

Building a utility trailer

First of all, when you get to make the primary decisions for choosing axle dimensions, you have to determine the weight capacity, type of suspension, the width of the frame, and height of the hitch. Here are some few steps you should follow to build your trailer:

1 The first actual step you should begin with is to cut up the main frame pieces and gather them together through the welding process. Make sure that the axle will fit before cutting and welding the main parts. You should use an abrasive saw and a stick welder for cutting and welding them together.

2 When you start positioning the axle’s location, you should consider that it relies on a few factors. If you are trying to build a tilting trailer, the axle should be close to the center of gravity to be able to do an easy tilting process. The main point is determining the tongue weight when everything else gets done as we said before. You can also add a toolbox to the front of the trailer, but it doesn’t have to be necessarily.

3 The other critical main point of this subject here is to make sure that the axle ends up square and centered on the frame (centered with the hitch). The distance from the hitch to each one of the wheels has to be the same to be able to ensure straight tracking on the road. As long as the tongue is square and centered to the frame, then the axle will be the same as well.

4 The fenders should be weld with a stick welder if possible. Then, they should be reinforced by some angle iron which also serves as basic points for the lights and license. You should also attach the top of the fenders to the sides to strengthen everything up.

You can buy various accessories for your trailer to suit your hauling needs for the trailer. Place the accessories’ sections in the openings of the trailer and weld the components together. The whole trailer should get an examination to remove any rust on the surface or weld spatter and should get painted at last.

Now I can say to you, congratulations as you’ve created a functional and adorable trailer. Good job.

These few steps you have learned can be done in several ways as you might need for your trailer. It could also cost you more if you used stronger types of metal and wood. I wish these few tips have been useful to you. Best of luck.
