A healthy and supple skin has always been one of the best indicators of good health. Dry skin, also called Xeroderma or Xerosis, is a common condition characterized by a lack of sufficient amount of hydration of the outermost layer of the skin, the epidermis, owing to the decreased amount of natural skin oils and lubricants due to pollution, harmful rays, and constant weather changes. As a result, the skin becomes dehydrated and loses its flexibility causing cracked, scaly and itchy skin. The areas most commonly affected include the arms, hands and lower legs.
You don’t always need to buy expensive remedies or go to salons to get your dry skin treated, here is a list of some effortless ways with which you can treat your dry skin at home without spending a lot of money!
1 Egg yolk
A very handy way of treating your dry skin at home is by making a face mask using an egg and a teaspoon of honey and milk powder each. Apply it evenly on all the dry areas and patches for 20 min and then wash it off with normal tap water.
2 Avocadoes and papaya
Papaya is a very effective remedy for dry skin that also removes wrinkles. To get these double benefits, take one avocado, a slice of papaya and one banana and make a paste. Apply over the affected areas and wash after a while. You will feel the difference!
3 Oil Therapy
Heat some olive, almond or coconut oil and massage lightly on to your hands, and massage the dry skin a little while before you shower. It keeps your skin supple and hydrated.
4 Yogurt
Yogurt has excellent anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Applying yogurt as it is or with some honey on your dry skin will soothe your cracked, itchy skin
5 Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is no doubt one of the oldest remedies for dry skin. Apply aloe vera gel generously on the dry skin patches and leave it on for 30 min. It is an excellent moisturizer and also forms a protective layer that will keep away all the impurities from entering the pores of your skin.
6 Olive oil and egg
Combine 1 egg, a teaspoon of olive oil and a few drops of lime juice and apply this paste on the affected areas for 15 min and then wash. Works wonders!
7 Almond Paste
Soak a handful of almonds overnight and then peel and grind the next morning. Add some milk, a teaspoon of gram flour and a few lemon drops to it and apply on the skin. Leave for 20 min and wash.
In addition to these remedies, making dietary changes like eating foods enriched with minerals, vitamins, and proteins like eggs, milk, nuts, carrots, oranges etc can really boost your skin and make it soft, well hydrated and luminous. Hence taking good care of your skin and eating well are both equally important to avoid dry skin.
